Ang Lee awarded by Cinemanila
Ang LEE 李安 was presented with the Lino Brocka Lifetime Achievement Award in Manila yesterday, at a pre-event of the Cinemanila International Film Festival.
The award was jointly presented by Cinemanila director Amable “Tikoy” AGUILUZ, director Brillante Ma. MENDOZA and actress Angeli BAYANI, from Golden Horse Awards 金馬獎 winner Ilo Ilo 爸媽不在家.
Lee’s Life of Pi was screened before the presentation, which included a post-screening discussion. The festival previously presented the award to Christine HAKIM, Quentin TARANTINO and Nora AUNOR.
Mendoza told local media that Lee used his first trip to the Philippines to scout for locations for his Muhammad Ali movie. During the on-stage discussion, Lee said, “I’m planning to do a movie here. I hope I get to make that movie.”
Lee also said that he was inspired by the success of Life of Pi outside North America, where it accounted for 85% of its income. He noted that the film made more in Canada than the United States. He described the fact as “good news for all of us”.
The event was co-organised by Cinemanila, the local branch of the Taipei Economic Cultural Office and the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), as part of its Film Cultural Exchange Program.
The 15th Cinemanila festival will be held from 18-22 Dec 2013.
